The Fermi Explorer Mission, a nonprofit organization, has announced plans to launch a spacecraft toward the Alpha Centauri star system by the end of 2029. Unlike previous high-speed interstellar concepts, this mission prioritizes feasibility over duration, with an estimated travel time of up to 80,000 years to cover the 4.4 light-year distance. The project is currently funded by private donors and carries a budget of $15 million.
To overcome the engineering challenges of a low-cost, long-duration mission, the team collaborated with Physical Superintelligence (PSI), an AI research lab recently launched with $58 million in funding from Breakthrough Energy. PSI utilized an open-source AI system called "Get Physics Done" to identify a novel trajectory. The AI proposed a series of maneuvers that involve swinging the spacecraft close to the sun to maximize solar energy for engine thrust, allowing for smaller solar panels and reduced weight.
The spacecraft is designed to carry at least one kilogram of cargo, including scientific instruments, artistic payloads, and a replica of NASA’s Golden Record. Philip Johnston, cofounder and president of the Fermi Explorer Mission, stated that the project is intended to demonstrate that interstellar travel is possible, even if the probe is eventually overtaken by faster technology developed in the future.
Beyond the engineering feat, the mission serves as a philosophical inquiry into the Fermi Paradox—the contradiction between the high probability of extraterrestrial life and the lack of evidence for it. Johnston noted that by attempting to reach another star, humanity may gain insight into whether intelligent civilizations are inherently rare or prone to self-destruction before they can achieve interstellar expansion.
