A diplomatic standoff between Cambodia and Thailand has intensified following a series of public accusations regarding border control and territorial integrity. The friction, which surfaced during the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference, involves conflicting claims over frontline border areas and the effectiveness of a ceasefire agreement signed on December 27, 2025.

Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet recently accused Thailand of stalling the ceasefire and employing a “salami-slicing strategy” to incrementally encroach upon Cambodian land. The Cambodian Senate formally rejected Thai claims, asserting that Thailand is using internal issues, such as human rights concerns and online scam networks, to undermine Cambodia’s international standing. In response, the Thai Senate dismissed these allegations as “unfounded” and accused Cambodia of using international forums to portray itself as a victim.

Political analysts suggest that the dispute has severely damaged public trust. Meas Nee, a political observer, noted that the conflict has stifled cross-border trade and created a rift that could take decades to heal. Meanwhile, analyst Seng Vannly emphasized that while the ceasefire remains a vital mechanism to prevent armed conflict, its effectiveness is hindered by a lack of mutual trust and the need for independent verification by bodies such as the ASEAN Observer Team and the Joint Boundary Commission.

The impact of the ongoing tension is most visible on the ground. In Preah Vihear, 691 families remain displaced due to safety concerns in restricted zones. Banteay Meanchey provincial officials reported that areas such as Prey Chan and Boeung Trarkuon remain under the control of Thai troops, with local residents facing strict limitations on their ability to farm or move freely.

For displaced residents, the situation has created significant economic and social hardship. Yim Sophal, a resident of Preah Vihear, reported that her family’s income has plummeted, and her children have been unable to attend school since clashes intensified last December. “I pray for peace in our country and for the war to stop,” she said.
