Recovery teams have retrieved two bodies following an avalanche that buried a climbing camp on the Himlung Himal peak in Nepal's Manang district. The incident occurred on Sunday morning, impacting a group of Nepalese climbers and support staff who had arrived early to establish routes and secure ropes for an upcoming expedition involving foreign mountaineers.
Authorities estimate that approximately a dozen individuals remain unaccounted for. Bibhuti Chand Thakur of Himalaya Holidays Trekking confirmed that at least eight members from his specific expedition team are among the missing. The 7,126-meter peak, situated on the border with Tibet, has experienced significant snowfall in recent days, creating hazardous conditions for rescue crews.
Efforts to reach the site have been severely restricted by persistent poor weather and heavy snow accumulation. While a specialized team of mountaineers was dispatched from Kathmandu via helicopter, operations were forced to pause and are expected to resume on Monday. The region has faced a period of intense rain and snow, which has disrupted climbing activities across Nepal, including recent evacuations at Mount Manaslu due to heightened avalanche risks.
