A significant glacial failure occurred on August 26 in the Langtang region of Nepal, close to the border with China. The event began when a glacier collapsed, sending a massive volume of ice and rock into the Lhende Khola, a tributary of the Bhote Koshi river. This debris created a temporary obstruction that eventually gave way, releasing a flash flood that surged approximately 100 kilometers down the Trishuli river valley.
Researchers are currently investigating the potential influence of rising temperatures on the incident. Experts suggest that warmer conditions may contribute to glacial permafrost instability by allowing meltwater to penetrate deeper into glacial crevasses, thereby compromising the structural integrity of ice and rock formations. Data from the British Antarctic Survey indicated that ground temperatures were notably high in the 48 hours leading up to the collapse.
The progression of the disaster has been documented through satellite imagery provided by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission. Authorities and aid organizations are currently coordinating relief efforts, with the Emergency Action Alliance managing a disaster appeal for those affected by the flooding.
