The Cambodian Ministry of Environment and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) are advancing a $47 million investment package dedicated to 20 environmental and climate-focused projects. During a recent meeting, officials reviewed the progress of these initiatives, which are supported by various international donors, to align investment priorities and improve coordination.
According to a joint statement, over $40 million of the total funding has been secured within the last year. These resources are earmarked for biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, the development of carbon credit projects, and the strengthening of national environmental policies. Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth stated that the collaboration is intended to “unlock climate finance and accelerate the green transition” while supporting the management of natural resources.
The funding arrives as Cambodia navigates significant environmental hurdles, including air pollution, water resource strain, and high rates of deforestation. Furthermore, the nation is preparing for the potential impacts of a prolonged El Niño event, which experts warn could lead to increased temperatures and drought conditions through early 2027, threatening food and water security.
UNDP Resident Representative Enrico Gaveglia noted that the organization aims to assist the Ministry in mobilizing international resources and technical expertise. Meanwhile, the Cambodian government has outlined ambitious environmental targets, including a goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2035 through increased renewable energy adoption.
Civil society groups have responded to the funding announcement with cautious optimism. Moeu Chandara, executive director of the Cambodian Youth Network, highlighted the importance of strictly enforcing forestry laws to protect natural areas. He also stressed the necessity of ensuring transparency in the management of these funds to effectively combat forestry crimes and improve community livelihoods.
