A violent incident in the town of Jarosław, south-east Poland, has resulted in the death of a priest and injuries to four other individuals. Authorities confirmed that a 31-year-old Ukrainian man was apprehended by police following the Thursday morning attack, which occurred on the grounds of a Catholic abbey.
According to local media reports, the sequence of events began at a nearby cafe where a priest was initially targeted. The assailant then proceeded to the abbey, where four additional people—four men and one woman—sustained stab wounds. The identity of the deceased priest has not been disclosed by officials.
Polish leadership has responded firmly to the tragedy. Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the perpetrator would face the full severity of the law, while Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński noted that psychological support services have been mobilized for those impacted by the violence.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed shock at the incident, emphasizing that the attacker must be held accountable. The Ukrainian embassy in Poland also issued a formal condemnation, urging the public to maintain respect for human life and avoid allowing the tragedy to fuel hatred. A police investigation is currently underway to determine the motive behind the attack.
