The recent state election in Saxony-Anhalt has delivered a major shift in Germany's political landscape, with the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) securing 43.8% of the vote. This result surpassed polling predictions by approximately 4% and marked a significant decline for the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which saw its support drop to 17.2% from 37.1% in 2021.
High voter turnout, reaching nearly 78%, appears to have benefited the AfD, which drew support from both former non-voters and previous CDU constituents. Furthermore, 73% of voters in the state expressed a belief that residents of eastern Germany are treated as second-class citizens, a sentiment the AfD successfully leveraged during its campaign.
The AfD’s path to power remains uncertain but potential avenues include a coalition with the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), which has acknowledged policy overlaps with the AfD. Alternatively, the party could seek support from individual CDU members during the secret ballot for minister president. If the AfD successfully forms a government, analysts expect intense scrutiny regarding the implementation of its manifesto, particularly in areas such as education, culture, and law enforcement.
The outcome places additional pressure on the federal government, as mainstream parties face increasing difficulty in forming stable coalitions. As traditional political alliances struggle to maintain broad electoral support, the resulting legislative gridlock has created an environment where the AfD continues to gain momentum.
