In a recent exploration of young people's attitudes toward artificial intelligence, the founding editors of the magazine Anyway, Jen Swetzoff and Keeley McNamara, discovered that children's perspectives are far more complex than anticipated. Instead of the expected focus on cheating, deepfakes, or job loss, the 10-to-18-year-olds they spoke with expressed a range of nuanced views. Some were so opposed to or disinterested in AI that they avoided the topic entirely, while others raised concerns about academic dishonesty, environmental costs, and the potential impact on creativity and critical thinking.
The editors noted that AI does not yet hold the same allure for kids as consumer gadgets like iPhones or social media platforms. However, they were struck by how much adults could learn from these young people about navigating an AI-infused future.
In a separate scientific development, researchers in Japan have, for the first time, deliberately converted male mouse embryos into females. The team, led by reproductive biologist Takashi Ishiuchi of the University of Yamanashi, used a CRISPR-based method to remove the Y chromosome from male cells, resulting in female clones of male mice. Ishiuchi suggests this achievement could challenge the long-held assumption that reproduction requires both sexes, and he hopes the technique might eventually aid in conserving endangered species with very small remaining populations.
