Legacy technology often presents a compounding risk for organizations, where the cost and complexity of system replacement lead to delayed action. However, the integration of artificial intelligence into software development is altering this dynamic, allowing companies to treat system migration as a strategic business transformation rather than a simple technical update.

Bupa, a global healthcare organization, recently demonstrated this shift by modernizing its "My Bupa" mobile application. The company transitioned its platform from Xamarin to native Swift and Kotlin. According to Asifa Sherazi, CIO of health insurance at Bupa, the move was a proactive measure to avoid the risks associated with end-of-life technology, such as security vulnerabilities, shrinking talent pools, and the inability to keep pace with evolving mobile operating systems.

The results of the migration were significant. The application’s user rating improved from 3.7 to 4.7, and user-perceived crash rates dropped by nearly 24 percentage points on Android and eight points on iOS. Sherazi noted that the primary goal was to ensure reliability during critical moments for customers, stating, "What they’ll notice is that when they need us, often at a stressful moment, it just simply works."

Sanjeev Tripathi, senior vice president at Infosys, which partnered with Bupa on the project, emphasized that AI is fundamentally changing the economics of these initiatives. By utilizing AI-assisted reverse and forward engineering, the team completed the transformation in approximately 60% less time than would have been required using traditional methods. Tripathi highlighted that modern platforms serve as a foundation for more predictive and personalized ecosystems, where AI is embedded into both design and operations rather than treated as an add-on.
