During Apple's annual product launch event, new CEO John Ternus debuted the company's first foldable smartphone, the "Duo." The device features a book-style folding mechanism and is positioned as the largest and most expensive iPhone to date, with starting prices set at $1,999 in the U.S. and £1,999 in the U.K. The price for the high-end model reaches $3,200.
Ternus, who previously led Apple's hardware division, described the Duo as "inspired by the iPad" and emphasized that the company aimed to avoid the design pitfalls of existing foldable phones, which he argued often feel like two separate devices joined together. The launch also included the new iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, alongside an updated artificial intelligence assistant, "Siri AI." This revamped assistant is designed to process personal data from messages and emails to perform tasks, with Ternus asserting that the company prioritizes user privacy by running many features directly on the device.
Industry analysts have expressed mixed views on the strategic move. While Ben Wood of FDM suggested the timing of the launch was calculated to highlight the transition in leadership, others remain cautious about the product's market potential. Dipanjan Chatterjee of Forrester noted that the device risks becoming a "premium-priced ornament" similar to the Vision Pro headset, rather than a mass-market success. Data from FDM indicates that foldable devices currently account for only 2% of the global smartphone market, with projections suggesting that figure may only rise to 4% over the next decade.
