The Norwegian Royal Palace has announced the death of Princess Astrid at the age of 94. Her passing occurred only two days after she made her final public appearance at the funeral of her brother, King Harald V, who died last month at 89.
Princess Astrid was the last surviving child of King Olav V. In 1954, at the age of 22, she assumed the role of Norway's first lady following the death of her mother, Crown Princess Märtha, a position she held until her brother married in 1968. King Haakon VIII paid tribute to her legacy, stating that she represented the Royal House with warmth and duty throughout her life. He further noted her dedication to supporting the most vulnerable members of society.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre confirmed that the princess will be laid to rest at state expense, with flags across the nation lowered to half-mast in her honor. Her health had been in decline recently, including a hospitalization for pneumonia this past March.
The funeral of King Harald V, held on Wednesday, drew numerous international dignitaries and European royals, including the Prince of Wales. The procession from the royal palace to Oslo Cathedral was attended by thousands of citizens, alongside leaders such as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
