A catastrophic debris flow has devastated the Bhote Koshi River valley in Nepal, resulting in over 150 confirmed deaths and hundreds of individuals reported missing. The disaster, which sent a massive wave of water, ice, and earth traveling more than 170 kilometres, has impacted a critical transit route connecting Kathmandu and Lhasa.

The scale of the event was significant enough to register as a 4.4 magnitude seismic disturbance. Reports indicate that by the time the debris reached the Gyirong Port border crossing, the wall of material reached an estimated height of 30 metres. Among those missing are at least 34 Australian citizens.

While investigations are ongoing, preliminary satellite analysis suggests the event was likely initiated by the collapse of a glacier. Experts note that the Himalayas, often referred to as the world’s “third pole,” are experiencing increasing instability due to climate change. Rising temperatures are causing the degradation of permafrost—ground that has remained frozen for centuries—which serves to bind steep mountain slopes together. When this frozen foundation thaws, it increases the risk of landslides and rockfalls.

Although the exact trigger for this specific collapse remains under investigation, the disaster follows a pattern of similar events globally, including recent incidents in Switzerland and Georgia. Experts emphasize that while total prevention of such geological events is difficult, the implementation of early warning systems—which monitor seismic activity and river levels—is essential for protecting vulnerable populations. Funding for improved monitoring in Nepal has been initiated through the Green Climate Fund, though experts stress that global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions remain vital to long-term adaptation.
