South African law enforcement officials are investigating the deaths of nine women discovered in the Ekurhuleni area near Johannesburg over the past two months. The most recent victim, a woman estimated to be in her 30s, was found on a roadside in Dawn Park on Thursday morning. Local reports indicate the body showed signs of bruising and stab wounds.

The series of discoveries began on July 15 in Kempton Park. While a suspect was apprehended shortly after that initial incident and remains in detention, investigators have not yet linked that individual to the subsequent eight deaths. Authorities have established a multidisciplinary team, including forensic experts and intelligence officers, to determine if the cases are connected or if a group is responsible for the violence. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia noted that, currently, the incidents appear to be distinct events.

The string of fatalities has caused significant distress among local residents. Bongeka Sebela, a resident of the area, told the BBC that women in the community no longer feel safe moving about freely. In response, President Cyril Ramaphosa has pledged that the government will exhaust all resources to identify those responsible for the killings.

Police have issued safety guidance for women, advising them to avoid isolated routes and to remain alert to their surroundings. A reward of 400,000 rand has been offered for information leading to arrests. South Africa continues to grapple with high rates of gender-based violence, with statistics from UN Women indicating that the country’s female homicide rate is five times the global average.
