In preparation for Sweden's September 13, 2026, general election, the Swedish Election Authority increased its number of international polling locations to approximately 290, up from 266 in 2022. Among the new, unconventional venues selected for this expansion were IKEA retail stores in Brisbane, Adelaide, Auckland, and Hyderabad.
The decision to utilize these commercial spaces reflects a pragmatic approach to reaching expatriate citizens. While embassies and consulates typically serve as the primary sites for state-sanctioned voting, the inclusion of IKEA stores—as well as other locations like the Swedish School in London and the American Swedish Historical Museum in Philadelphia—demonstrates an effort to host polling in places where Swedish communities already congregate.
IKEA, which has grown to include over 500 stores in more than 60 countries since its founding in 1958, is recognized as a significant cultural export for Sweden. The brand is often associated with the country’s national identity, projecting values of functionality and accessibility. This connection was highlighted by IKEA New Zealand, which promoted the voting initiative on social media as "Democratic Design meeting actual democracy."
By integrating civic participation into familiar retail environments, the Swedish government has effectively turned commercial hubs into temporary community centers for the diaspora. This strategy acknowledges that for many citizens living abroad, national identity is often maintained through shared cultural touchstones and brands rather than solely through formal diplomatic institutions.
