United States military forces have carried out an operation against two Iranian launchers located on Larak Island. This action represents the first reported American strike within Iran since late July, following a period of relative calm in direct military engagements.
According to US Central Command spokesman Cdr Tim Hawkins, the strike was prompted by observations of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) personnel preparing to deploy rockets equipped with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway serves as a critical global shipping route, and the US recently claimed to have cleared the area of previous mining efforts.
Iranian officials have condemned the operation, with IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebbi characterizing the strike as a "strategic and fatal mistake" and promising retaliation. State-affiliated media outlet Tasnim reported that the attack, which reportedly involved the use of drones, resulted in two deaths and two injuries. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi dismissed earlier US assertions regarding the successful removal of all mines from the strait as "propaganda."
Larak Island is situated near the port of Bandar Abbas and has become a focal point of regional tensions. Reports suggest Iran has been utilizing the location to monitor tanker traffic and impose transit fees on vessels. The incident occurs amidst heightened economic pressure, following the implementation of a new round of US sanctions on August 24 intended to isolate Tehran. The ongoing conflict, which began with wide-ranging strikes by the US and Israel in late February, has now persisted for over six months, significantly disrupting the flow of oil and liquefied natural gas through the region.
