The German government has officially identified Russia as the party responsible for a drone attack that occurred at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4. Investigators found a drone equipped with an explosive device near Ukrainian cargo planes; the device failed to detonate due to a faulty trigger. Authorities also reported a second drone collision with a nearby cargo aircraft and the discovery of a third drone in the vicinity ten days later.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt characterized the incident as part of a recurring pattern of Russian hybrid operations within Europe. In response, German officials announced several retaliatory measures, including the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the termination of the contract for the Russian House in Berlin. Additionally, the government plans to implement stricter entry requirements for Russian citizens and increase scrutiny of the "shadow fleet" of tankers used by Moscow to bypass international sanctions.
The Russian embassy in Berlin dismissed the accusations as "absurd," while Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Moscow would respond with "mirror-image" measures. The Russian embassy further described the German actions as an "unprecedented escalation" in bilateral relations.
The Leipzig/Halle facility serves as a critical logistics hub for NATO and the German military, and it functions as a base for Antonov Airlines, which handles significant aerial cargo for Ukraine. International support for Germany’s position was voiced by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the latter of whom confirmed that the European Union is preparing further sanctions against Russia.
The announcement coincides with heightened security concerns across Germany, including an ongoing investigation into incendiary devices found at a power substation in Brandenburg. As the government considers expanding the powers of its intelligence services to combat hybrid threats, political debate continues regarding the adequacy of the current response to Russian activities.
