MIT Technology Review has unveiled its 2026 list of "35 Innovators Under 35," spotlighting nine individuals who are advancing research and industrial solutions within the climate and energy sectors. The selection reflects a broader industry trend where artificial intelligence is increasingly integrated into environmental problem-solving.
Several honorees are leveraging AI to improve climate-related data and efficiency. Jae-Won Chung is developing software to measure and reduce the energy consumption of AI models, while Jing Wei utilizes machine learning to synthesize satellite and weather data for more accurate pollution tracking. Additionally, Zhonghua Zheng has created AI-driven climate models specifically designed to address the unique environmental conditions of urban areas.
Material science remains a critical focus as the global demand for lithium and other minerals grows. To address potential supply shortages, Mohammad Alkhadra of Lithios is working on efficient lithium extraction from brine, while Benjamin Mowbray of Rock Zero is focusing on cost-effective extraction from hardrock ore.
The list also highlights innovators tackling industrial emissions and waste. Laureen Meroueh is developing a furnace technology to produce cleaner, more affordable steel, which currently accounts for approximately 7% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Other notable projects include Joseph Nguthiru’s use of invasive weeds to create bioplastics, Diana Orembe’s conversion of food waste into aquaculture feed, and Jinyoung Seo’s development of solid-state refrigerants designed to minimize leakage and improve energy efficiency.
