MIT Technology Review has released its latest issue, dedicated to exploring the complex relationship between children and technology. The publication investigates how young people are navigating an era defined by artificial intelligence, examining topics ranging from the psychological effects of AI companions to the role of monitoring software in child safety. The issue, produced in collaboration with the teen-focused magazine Anyway, also features fiction from AI ethicist Jenny Williams and explores the broader implications of a world where technology is increasingly integrated into childhood.
The launch coincides with heightened warnings from industry leaders regarding the trajectory of AI development. Former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates recently voiced significant alarm over the speed at which these systems are evolving, noting that safety guardrails are failing to keep pace with innovation. Gates highlighted specific concerns regarding AI’s potential for misuse in cybersecurity, biological threats, and the destabilization of job markets.
“We’ve crossed the threshold in terms of [AI’s] bio-capabilities, cyber-capabilities, psychosocial capabilities, job-market-destruction capabilities, and even the lack of control,” Gates stated. He further expressed surprise at the limited public discourse surrounding these risks outside of the technology sector.
