NASA has expanded its partnership with SpaceX, securing three additional crewed missions to the International Space Station (ISS) through a $946 million contract modification. The agreement covers the Crew-15, Crew-16, and Crew-17 flights, ensuring continued transportation services through 2030.
The contract modification, issued under the Commercial Crew Transportation Capability (CCtCap) program, encompasses a comprehensive suite of services. These include launch, ground operations, in-orbit support, return and recovery, as well as cargo delivery and the provision of a lifeboat capability while the spacecraft is docked at the station. These missions are scheduled for readiness in 2027 and 2028.
This latest update brings the total number of SpaceX missions under the CCtCap contract to 17, with the cumulative contract value reaching $5.92 billion. NASA noted that this sole-source modification does not prevent the agency from pursuing further transportation agreements in the future if necessary.
The Commercial Crew Program, established in 2014, relies on public-private partnerships with SpaceX and Boeing to maintain a consistent human presence on the ISS. SpaceX achieved official certification for crew transportation in November 2020 and currently has its Crew-12 mission docked at the orbital laboratory. The company utilizes its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft to transport up to four astronauts and essential supplies per mission.
