OpenAI has announced that its next artificial intelligence model, internally referred to as Astra, will be subject to new security restrictions. The decision follows internal testing that categorized the model as a “critical” cyber risk, marking the first time one of the company's systems has reached this threshold. According to reports, the model demonstrated an ability to automate cyberattacks, prompting the company to implement additional safety measures before its release.
The move comes amid broader industry concerns regarding the safety of advanced AI systems. Marius Hobbhahn, CEO of the AI safety research group Apollo Research, emphasized the importance of oversight, stating, “If you build an entity that is vastly smarter than you, it better be on your side.”
In other technology developments, the Fermi Explorer Mission, a nonprofit organization, has announced plans to launch a spacecraft toward the Alpha Centauri star system by the end of 2029. The mission intends to utilize a trajectory path discovered by an AI system developed at the physics research lab PSI. While the mission is highly ambitious, the spacecraft could take up to 80,000 years to reach the star system, which is located 4.4 light-years from Earth.
