Petroleum-derived adhesives are currently ubiquitous in manufacturing, appearing in everything from furniture joints and construction materials to the labels on consumer packaging. According to Patty Ferreira, CEO and cofounder of Silvis Materials, these synthetic glues often prevent containers from being recycled, as the adhesive residue remains even when the container itself is placed in a recycling bin.

Ferreira, a 1997 MIT MBA graduate, launched her efforts to create a sustainable alternative in 2014. Her company, Silvis Materials, has developed a biodegradable adhesive derived from cellulose. By modifying cellulose to act as a stabilizer in adhesive emulsions, the team has created a formula capable of utilizing plant-based materials to replicate the properties of more costly nanocellulose.

The company is currently collaborating with firms in the construction and packaging sectors through the MIT Startup Exchange to pilot the technology. Projections indicate that transitioning to these bio-based adhesives could reduce production-related emissions by as much as 80% while requiring half the energy consumption of traditional fossil-fuel-based glues.
