The British government has unveiled a comprehensive sanctions package targeting illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband stated that the measures, which will be implemented over the next six to nine months, aim to address what he described as the "ethnic cleansing" of Palestinians by settlers—a policy he accused the Israeli government of ignoring or supporting.
The sanctions include a ban on the import of settlement goods, restrictions on companies and individuals facilitating settlement expansion, and a prohibition on advertising these settlements within the UK. Miliband emphasized that the policy is intended to support a two-state solution and aligns with a 2024 advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice regarding the illegality of the Israeli occupation.
The announcement was coordinated with a joint statement from 12 nations, including France, Canada, and several European partners, all expressing commitment to the two-state solution. Miliband noted that the move was specifically prompted by Israeli plans to develop the E1 area, which he argued would render a future Palestinian state "unviable."
The Israeli government reacted sharply to the decision. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar labeled the sanctions an "outrageous lie" and announced immediate counter-measures, including the closure of the UK’s consulate in East Jerusalem and the termination of UK-led training programs for Palestinian Authority forces. Additionally, Israel announced entry bans for 11 British lawmakers, including Jeremy Corbyn and Diane Abbott, citing alleged anti-Israel activities.
Domestic reaction in the UK was divided. While the Palestinian presidency welcomed the move as a step against "colonial" practices, the Board of Deputies of British Jews expressed "deep regret," and Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis characterized the decision as a "dark day" that could embolden hatred. Conservative shadow foreign secretary Tom Tugendhat criticized the policy as ineffective, while US officials signaled they would not follow the UK's lead, with ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee warning of potential economic repercussions for British businesses.
