This assessment followed a series of closed-door meetings in Kyiv with top US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who traveled to Ukraine after holding discussions with Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
While the meetings in Kyiv concluded without a major breakthrough, Zelensky noted that officials from Ukraine, the US, and Europe are scheduled to continue discussions in the near future. The Ukrainian leader also advocated for a trilateral meeting involving Russia and the US to seek a resolution that prevents future aggression. During the talks, Zelensky emphasized that should the war continue through the winter, Ukraine will require significant support for its energy infrastructure and air defense systems, noting that the country is looking toward increased American production of anti-ballistic technology.
The US delegation described their recent diplomatic efforts as substantive. Kushner noted that the team engaged in a detailed dialogue with Putin regarding the requirements for a "durable peace," while Witkoff expressed confidence in reaching a resolution. According to Russian state media, Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov characterized the Moscow talks as "constructive" and "extremely frank," highlighting that discussions covered economic issues and the root causes of the conflict.
The diplomatic mission occurred amid continued hostilities. Both nations agreed to a three-day pause on strikes targeting each other's capitals to facilitate the envoys' travel. However, combat operations persisted elsewhere, with Ukraine reporting strikes on a Russian oil refinery and airfield, while Russia launched a large-scale aerial assault involving over 100 drones and missiles against Ukrainian targets.
