Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described a recent drone strike on the Russian capital as the most significant of its kind, reporting that 450 drones were intercepted. The assault resulted in damage to a major oil refinery and a residential building, with regional officials confirming at least two fatalities and 20 injuries.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the operation targeted a critical oil facility and logistics site, stating these strikes aim to disrupt the financial resources supporting Russia's military efforts. According to the Ukrainian defense ministry, the damaged refinery provides over a third of the Moscow region's fuel, including supplies utilized by the Russian military. Ukrainian Defense Minister stated that such actions are intended to undermine the enemy's capacity to sustain its war of aggression.
The strikes caused temporary disruptions at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo airports, though operations were largely restored by Sunday morning. Mayor Sobyanin suggested the timing of the attack was intended to interfere with Russia's parliamentary elections.
Simultaneously, Russian forces continued their own offensive operations. Ukrainian officials reported that nine people, including three children, died in Russian strikes across the Kyiv and Sumy regions on Saturday. Additional casualties were reported in the Kherson region, where a drone strike on a monastery resulted in one death among the clergy. These events occur despite recent claims by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a potential agreement between the two nations to avoid targeting energy infrastructure.
