Starting Tuesday, businesses in England and Wales are permitted to accept digital identification apps as proof of age for alcohol purchases. This initiative, introduced by the government, allows customers to use mobile applications from approved providers—such as Yoti, the Post Office, or Luciditi—as an alternative to traditional physical documents like passports or driving licenses.
Under the new voluntary framework, the process is designed to minimize the amount of personal data shared with retailers. Instead of presenting a physical ID, users can verify their age by scanning a QR code or using a reader. To prevent fraud, the apps utilize biometric security measures, such as facial recognition, to ensure the device belongs to the user. The generated verification codes are time-limited to prevent unauthorized sharing.
Digital government minister Stephanie Peacock stated that the shift allows individuals to avoid carrying physical documents and reduces the need to disclose sensitive personal information, potentially helping people "feel safer on a night out." Allen Simpson, chief executive of UKHospitality, welcomed the move as a "positive step," noting that the industry intends to collaborate with the government to ensure the implementation remains cost-effective and efficient for businesses.
The government aims for these digital services to function across various platforms and remain operational even without an active internet connection. While the current focus is on alcohol sales, officials have indicated the scheme could eventually expand to include tobacco and vaping products.
However, the transition has drawn caution from privacy advocates. Jasleen Chaggar of Big Brother Watch warned that digital ID should not become a mandatory requirement, noting that many individuals may prefer physical documentation due to privacy concerns or a lack of access to digital tools. She urged the government to ensure that businesses continue to offer reasonable alternatives to digital verification.
