Linda Kitchen, a 74-year-old resident of Thornbury, has launched a legal claim against Singapore Airlines after a flight in May 2024 resulted in the death of her husband, Geoff Kitchen. The couple was traveling from London Heathrow to Australia for a six-week holiday when the aircraft encountered severe turbulence over Myanmar.
During the incident, the plane experienced a sudden drop of approximately 6,000 feet, leading to an emergency diversion to Bangkok. Linda Kitchen, who suffered a broken back during the event, described the experience as terrifying, noting that the aircraft felt as though it were falling out of the sky. She recalled that her husband, 73, fell onto her during the turbulence; he is understood to have suffered a heart attack shortly thereafter. Despite medical assistance provided by a doctor on board, he could not be resuscitated.
Following the emergency landing, Linda Kitchen spent 10 days in a hospital in Thailand before being airlifted to Bristol, where she required further inpatient care and ongoing support at home. She is now seeking damages through the High Court to cover the costs of her medical needs and to pursue answers regarding the circumstances of the flight.
Anthe Korelidou, the aviation lawyer representing the family, stated that the legal action marks a significant step in addressing the family's concerns. "All Linda wants is for the most thorough investigations to be conducted," Korelidou said, adding that the proceedings are intended to provide the family with the clarity they have sought since the tragedy.
