The US Department of Defense has proposed a $30.3 million budget allocation over the next five years to develop an advanced lie detection system. The initiative, referred to as “Polygraph+” or “Polygraph Next,” aims to move beyond traditional methods by integrating artificial intelligence and machine learning into its scoring algorithms.

A key component of the proposed technology is “standoff sensing,” a method designed to capture physiological data from individuals without the need for physical attachments. The project seeks to enhance the overall accuracy and reliability of polygraph assessments, though it faces skepticism given the historical challenges associated with technological attempts to detect deception.
