The British supermarket chain Iceland is set to establish its first retail presence in the Falkland Islands. According to company chairman Lord Richard Walker, the new store is scheduled to open in the capital, Stanley, this December.
The expansion is being conducted through a partnership with Kelper Stores, a subsidiary of the Fortuna group. The facility will cater to the local population of approximately 3,500 residents. Lord Walker noted that the company’s focus on frozen goods makes the territory an ideal location for export, as the products are well-suited for long-distance transport.
Regarding the pricing strategy for the new location, Lord Walker stated that the company expects to offer prices roughly 30% lower than existing local competitors, aiming to provide increased value to the market. He described the islands as an "underserved" region with limited competition.
While the move comes amid ongoing geopolitical discussions regarding the territory, Lord Walker emphasized that the timing of the store's launch is coincidental. The chairman intends to travel to the islands personally to oversee the official opening ceremony.
