Job seekers are increasingly being targeted by sophisticated fraudulent schemes that mimic legitimate recruitment processes to gain access to victims' private information and financial accounts. Platforms such as LinkedIn and Indeed have reported a surge in these activities, which often exploit the pressure of a competitive labor market.
One victim, who requested anonymity, reported losing £18,000 in cryptocurrency savings after being contacted by a fake recruiter on LinkedIn. The scam involved a video interview and a technical assessment that required the candidate to download a document. Unbeknownst to the victim, the file contained malicious software that allowed hackers to drain their digital wallets within hours. The victim described the experience as emotionally and mentally draining, noting that the process appeared entirely professional until the theft occurred.
Cybersecurity researchers from Have I Been Squatted noted that these attacks have become difficult to identify because they utilize legitimate platforms, such as Google, and feature software that appears digitally signed. Juxhin D Brigjaj, CEO of the firm, explained that the attackers walk victims through what appears to be a standard, credible interview process.
Indeed has issued specific warnings regarding fraudulent mobile applications, such as fake interview tools, that criminals use to lure applicants. The company clarified that its interview process is conducted entirely within a web browser and never requires the installation of external applications. Security firm Malwarebytes added that scammers often use promises of salary agreements or mandatory app installations to trick users into compromising their devices.
LinkedIn data suggests that younger professionals are particularly vulnerable, with 32% of those surveyed admitting they may overlook red flags due to the scarcity of job opportunities. Experts advise applicants to verify the legitimacy of companies and conduct thorough research before engaging in recruitment discussions or downloading any files.
