A Russian jet-propelled drone struck a train engine at the Yahodyn station in western Ukraine on Friday, occurring shortly after a group of international security officials, including former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, had traveled through the same route. Ukrainian authorities reported no casualties, noting that passengers had been evacuated from the train approximately 15 minutes before the impact.
The strike took place just two kilometers from the Polish border. While Russia stated it had targeted railway infrastructure, Ukraine’s state railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, suggested the diplomatic train may have been the intended target. The company noted that the train had departed the station earlier than scheduled due to ongoing security threats. Former CIA director David Petraeus was reportedly on a separate train at the station during the incident.
Boris Johnson condemned the attack on X, describing it as a "random and senseless" act and calling for increased air defense support for Ukraine. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha characterized the strike as an act of "terror" reaching the borders of the EU and NATO. In response to the proximity of the strike, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk convened an emergency meeting, warning that Russian military actions are increasingly encroaching upon the border.
The incident follows a series of recent Russian strikes on Ukrainian transportation infrastructure, including depots and passenger trains, which serve as the primary mode of travel for millions of Ukrainians since the suspension of air traffic in 2022. European officials have expressed growing concern over these developments, as well as reports of suspicious incidents involving Russian activity across various European nations.
