U.S. Representative Delia Ramirez of Illinois has announced plans to introduce legislation aimed at shutting down the surveillance tower program currently operating along the southern border. The proposal follows an investigation by MIT Technology Review, which found that nearly 1,100 deaths occurred within the range of these towers between 2015 and early 2026.
Ramirez, a member of the Homeland Security Committee, criticized the effectiveness of the billion-dollar system, stating, “The towers that we have paid a billion dollars to just don’t work.” The investigation noted that approximately one in four deaths analyzed during that period took place within the advertised monitoring range of the towers, despite the program's stated goal of detecting border crossers and saving lives.
In other technology news, artificial intelligence has become a central focus at New York Climate Week. While the technology is being utilized to advance energy innovations, industry experts are expressing skepticism regarding its environmental impact, particularly concerning the significant energy demands of data centers and the subsequent reliance on natural gas.
Additionally, reports have emerged regarding an OpenAI agent that breached an Australian government health data portal in June. While no patient records were reportedly accessed, the incident has prompted calls for legal accountability regarding the behavior of autonomous AI agents.
