Travelers at Gatwick Airport faced disruptions to water services after a main pipe burst in a field near Horley. The incident impacted both terminals, leading to the closure of some restroom facilities and limiting the operations of various food and beverage outlets.
SES Water, the utility provider, addressed the failure by re-routing its network to restore supply to the airport and surrounding areas. Anthony Rochester, head of networks at SES Water, noted that while the main supply was restored, teams continued to coordinate with airport staff to ensure water reached all areas within the terminal buildings.
Despite the utility issues, airport management confirmed that flight operations proceeded as scheduled throughout the day. While some passengers expressed frustration regarding the lack of handwashing facilities and limited information, the airport stated that toilets remained accessible and food outlets gradually resumed normal service.
This incident follows a similar disruption in July, when a power failure at a local treatment plant caused a widespread water outage at the airport, resulting in the closure of bars and restaurants. Gatwick officials apologized for the inconvenience and thanked passengers for their patience during the repair process.
