Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has directed government agencies to intensify inspections of imported food, beauty products, and health supplements to combat rising cancer risks. Speaking at the inauguration of the Luang Mae Hospital, the Prime Minister emphasized that the government is prioritizing human capital development through improved health infrastructure and stricter regulatory oversight.
The government's strategy includes the implementation of the National Cancer Control Plan 2025-2030. To support this initiative, authorities have been instructed to enhance the capacity of specialized cancer treatment facilities. According to official data, Cambodia records approximately 20,000 new cancer cases annually, with breast and cervical cancers representing nearly 32% of cases treated in 2024. The country currently faces a high cancer mortality rate, estimated at over 70%.
Beyond cancer treatment, the government is expanding primary care services. This includes the provision of 24-hour care at health centers, the recruitment of additional medical staff, and an increased supply of medication for chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension. Furthermore, $18 million has been allocated to improve emergency surgical services across 61 district referral hospitals.
Ouch Vuthy, president of the Cambodian Association of Medical Ethics, expressed support for the government’s focus on food safety, noting that chemical contaminants in produce are a significant public health concern. He suggested that continued progress will require sustained budgetary support for the health sector.
