A five-storey residential building, known as Hostel Daze, collapsed in the Satya Niketan neighborhood of south-west Delhi on Sunday afternoon. The incident, which occurred around 13:30 local time, has left at least three people dead and three others in critical condition, according to local police reports cited by PTI. Approximately eight individuals have been rescued from the site thus far.
Witnesses estimate that up to 50 people may have been inside the structure at the time of the collapse. The building, located near the Delhi University campus, was reportedly undergoing excavation work in the basement intended to expand the hostel's capacity. Local accounts suggest that while upper levels had been reinforced, the foundation pillars remained weak. A nearby building also collapsed during the incident, prompting authorities to evacuate adjacent structures as a safety precaution.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that rescue operations are ongoing to locate those still trapped, with reports indicating that some individuals have been able to make contact from beneath the rubble. Police are currently searching for the building's owner as calls for an official investigation mount. The National Students' Union of India has demanded accountability, citing concerns over safety negligence.
Building collapses are a recurring issue in Delhi, often attributed to substandard construction materials, poor structural foundations, and the use of unqualified labor. Fire department data indicates that over 1,000 such incidents have occurred in the city within the last three years.
