A team of celebrity lawyers, including Blair Berk, Marilyn Bednarski, and Regina Peter, has officially withdrawn from representing US musician David Anthony Burke, professionally known as D4vd. The 21-year-old artist is currently facing charges of first-degree murder, mutilation of human remains, and child sexual abuse in connection with the death of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez.

Following the withdrawal, a Los Angeles judge appointed the Los Angeles County Public Defender's Office to oversee Burke's defense. In a statement, the former legal team noted that Burke "qualified for appointed counsel" and expressed confidence in the new team, which is led by Deputy Public Defender Walid Kandeel. Kandeel stated that his office is committed to providing a defense that "carefully examines the evidence."

Burke, who pleaded not guilty to the charges on Monday, is accused of killing Hernandez in April 2025. Prosecutors allege that the victim was stabbed at Burke's Hollywood residence after she threatened to expose their relationship and damage his music career. The remains of the teenager were discovered in September 2025 inside a vehicle registered to the singer.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman indicated that the transition to a public defender could potentially impact the trial timeline, as the new legal team may require additional time to review case materials. The prosecution is pursuing special circumstance allegations related to financial gain, which could make the defendant eligible for the death penalty. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for October 19.
