Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian declared that his nation would never "bend the knee" in response to threats from US President Donald Trump. The remarks followed Trump’s recent assertion that Iran must either negotiate a deal or face potential "annihilation."
Pezeshkian characterized the US president’s rhetoric as a "bullying mentality," asserting that increased sanctions and pressure would only strengthen Iranian resistance. Despite this firm stance, the Iranian leader indicated that Tehran remains open to diplomacy, provided such discussions are not conducted under the "language of force."
A central point of contention remains the Strait of Hormuz. Pezeshkian demanded that any future agreement must include the lifting of a US-led blockade that restricts Iranian vessels from the waterway. "It cannot be the case that everyone benefits from the Strait of Hormuz while we are denied access," he stated. Additionally, Pezeshkian reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to a civilian nuclear program, explicitly stating that the country does not seek nuclear weapons but will not accept limitations on peaceful nuclear technology.
During his address, the Iranian president displayed images of civilian casualties, including those from a strike on a primary school in Minab, and referenced the death of the late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during a joint US-Israeli operation in February. The US delegation exited the chamber as Pezeshkian began his speech.
The diplomatic climate remains tense, with indirect talks between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US envoy Steve Witkoff taking place on the sidelines of the UN summit. While US officials expressed hope for constructive dialogue, Iranian representatives maintained that their core conditions—including the end of the blockade and the release of frozen assets—remain unchanged.
