NASA has officially opened registration for the 2026-2027 Dream with Us Design Challenge, titled “Fueling Flight Design Challenge: New Energy Systems.” The competition invites middle school students across the United States to explore the integration of liquefied natural gas (LNG) into the national aviation infrastructure.
The challenge focuses on the evolving needs of the aviation industry as it seeks to improve safety, affordability, and efficiency. Participants are tasked with adapting an existing airport or designing a new one that can accommodate both traditional aviation fuel and LNG. This requires students to consider necessary modifications to airport layouts, including terminals, runways, hangars, and fuel storage facilities, while addressing the safety and operational requirements of new aircraft designs.
The competition is open to students in grades 6 through 8. Teams must consist of two to four members, and all submissions must be the original work of the students. NASA has explicitly prohibited the use of artificial intelligence tools, including generative AI for text, code, or imagery, in any part of the project. All entries must also adhere to Section 508 accessibility standards, requiring descriptive alt text for all visual elements.
The submission period runs from September 25, 2026, through January 22, 2027. Each entry must include a technical presentation detailing the airport's design and a creative component, such as a video, brochure, or infographic, intended to promote the benefits of the proposed infrastructure changes. Entries will be evaluated by industry experts based on originality, practicality, and the impact of the proposed design.
Interested participants can find further information, including submission links and educational resources regarding LNG, on the official NASA Dream with Us website. Educators and students can also look forward to a mid-point check-in session scheduled for October to assist with the design process.
