OpenAI has officially disbanded its preparedness team, a group previously tasked with evaluating and mitigating high-level risks associated with its artificial intelligence models, such as cybersecurity threats. According to reports, the responsibilities formerly held by this unit have been reassigned to existing teams focused on specific domains, including biological and cyber risks.
This organizational change follows a series of departures among the company's leadership and safety personnel. Recent exits include ethics lead Chloé Bakalar, chief futurist Josh Achiam, and head of safety Johannes Heidecke. These shifts have drawn criticism from former employees, including Jan Leike, who resigned earlier this year and suggested that the organization is prioritizing product development over safety protocols.
Dylan Scandinaro, who previously led the preparedness team after joining from Anthropic in February, will transition to a new role centered on the study of recursive self-improving AI. The dissolution of the preparedness team marks the latest in a series of structural adjustments at the company, which has previously seen the closure of its superalignment and AGI readiness divisions.
