OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it has utilized a new, advanced artificial intelligence model to address a long-standing mathematical challenge. By deploying approximately 10,000 autonomous AI agents, the company claims to have reached a solution for parts of the Navier-Stokes existence and smoothness problem—a complex set of equations regarding fluid dynamics that has remained unproven for 90 years—in just 88 hours.
The effort involved the exchange of nearly 3 million messages and the consumption of 130 billion output tokens. OpenAI estimated that the computational cost of this endeavor would be approximately $10 million based on their current pricing models. The company clarified that while their work resolved two of the four statements required by the Millennium Prize, they do not intend to claim the $1 million award associated with the challenge.
The announcement has drawn scrutiny from the academic community. Tristan Buckmaster, a mathematics professor at New York University, alleged that OpenAI began its work on the equations only after receiving information about his own research, which he conducted alongside Levent Alpöge of Anthropic. Buckmaster expressed concerns regarding the timing of OpenAI's disclosure, stating he felt compelled to speak out to address what he described as a false narrative.
In response, OpenAI acknowledged the "remarkable" concurrent work of Buckmaster and Alpöge. The company denied accessing their research data, asserting that their own proofs differ significantly from those of the researchers. OpenAI stated that while they cannot rule out the possibility that de-identified data from user interactions may have influenced model improvements, they maintained that no specific user data was accessed during the project. The solution has not yet undergone independent verification or formal acceptance by the Clay Mathematics Institute.
