Hackney Council has launched an investigation into the Shoreditch House venue, a prominent site operated by the private members' club Soho House, following reports of hygiene and food safety violations. The inquiry was prompted by allegations from a former employee, Kamran Khan, who claimed that staff were instructed to replace expiration labels on unsold food items.
Khan, 30, alleged that he was pressured to alter labels to extend the shelf life of prepared goods, warning that failure to do so would be viewed as a performance issue. Furthermore, he reported persistent rodent sightings at the facility, stating that cleaning staff were required to monitor the premises daily for droppings. Khan, who was on probation at the time, stated he felt compelled to report these issues due to concerns regarding the health of vulnerable guests, including pregnant women and children.
Soho House acknowledged that an isolated incident regarding food labelling had occurred but maintained that such practices are not company policy. In a statement, a spokesperson for the club expressed regret, noting that an independent audit and investigation were conducted to address the matter. The company emphasized its commitment to food safety standards while clarifying that Khan’s employment termination in September was unrelated to his internal complaints.
The club, which operates 46 locations globally and counts high-profile figures among its membership, has faced recent financial challenges and shifts in ownership. Hackney Council confirmed it is currently reviewing the reported concerns as part of its ongoing investigation into the venue's operations.
