Slate Auto is attempting to disrupt the American electric vehicle market by prioritizing affordability and simplicity over the high-range specifications that have dominated the industry. The company’s upcoming two-door electric pickup is smaller than a Honda Civic and features a minimalist design, including manual window cranks on the base model.

Equipped with a 65-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate battery, the truck offers an estimated range of 205 miles. This is significantly lower than many competitors, such as the base Tesla Model 3, which exceeds 320 miles. By reducing battery size and eliminating luxury features, Slate Auto has set a starting price below $25,000—a sharp contrast to the current average new vehicle price of approximately $50,000 in the United States.

The shift toward smaller, more affordable EVs comes as the US market faces a decline in electric vehicle adoption. Previous attempts to electrify popular segments, such as the Ford F-150 Lightning, faced challenges including rising costs and the loss of government tax credits. The Lightning, which saw its base price climb from $40,000 to over $54,000 during its production run, was discontinued by Ford in December 2025.

Industry analysts suggest that the American obsession with long-range EVs may be misaligned with actual driving habits. Data indicates that the average American driver covers fewer than 35 miles daily, with 90% of personal trips spanning 20 miles or less. While US consumers have historically prioritized range, economic pressures and the rising cost of living have increased interest in budget-conscious transportation.

Slate Auto has secured nearly $1.4 billion in funding from investors, including Jeff Bezos, and reports thousands of preorders. The company plans to begin deliveries in late 2026, with an initial production capacity of 100,000 units. Competition is expected to grow, as Ford is reportedly developing its own small electric truck, slated for a 2027 release with a target price of approximately $30,000.
