Hannah Earley, the 31-year-old cofounder and CTO of Vaire Computing, is working to shift the paradigm of computer chip design by implementing a concept known as reversible computing. While traditional processors dissipate energy as heat when they erase information during calculations, Earley’s approach aims to retain that information, allowing circuits to run backward and recover energy that would otherwise be wasted.
The core of this innovation is a patent-pending resonator, a microscopic component Earley describes as a "glorified pendulum" that stores energy for reuse. In 2025, Vaire achieved a significant milestone by demonstrating a chip capable of recovering more energy than it consumed, providing empirical evidence for a concept that has remained largely theoretical for over 50 years.
Earley’s interest in the intersection of information and energy began during her PhD studies at the University of Cambridge. After reading the work of reversible computing pioneer Michael Frank, she shifted her focus from DNA-based computation to the physical limits of hardware. She cofounded Vaire in 2021 alongside entrepreneur Rodolfo Rosini. The startup has since secured over $12 million in funding and brought Frank on board as a senior scientist.
Industry experts acknowledge the potential of the technology while noting the challenges ahead. Igor Markov, a researcher in electronic design automation, noted that while the progress is promising, the company faces a long road of "increasingly realistic and convincing demonstrations" to achieve commercial viability. Earley remains focused on the long-term goal of rebuilding computing architecture from the ground up to prioritize energy efficiency.
