A tragic aviation accident occurred on Saturday in southern Peru, where a small tourist aircraft crashed while flying over the Nazca Lines, a renowned UNESCO World Heritage site. All 13 individuals aboard the flight—comprising 11 passengers and two pilots—lost their lives in the incident.
The aircraft, operated by the local carrier Aerodiana, departed from an airport in Pisco before going down in the Pueblo Viejo region at approximately 13:00 local time. Police Major Jorge Andrade confirmed the absence of survivors, noting that recovery efforts for the victims were underway.
While the identities of all passengers have not been officially released, William Acosta of the Civil Aviation Directorate General indicated that Italian nationals are believed to be among those killed. The Municipalidad Provincial de Nasca issued a statement expressing condolences to the families affected by the disaster.
The Nazca Lines, famous for their ancient geoglyphs etched into the desert floor, have been the site of previous aviation accidents. Similar crashes occurred in the region in 2010 and 2022, resulting in multiple fatalities. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of this latest crash, and investigations are ongoing.
