Data released by Angkor Enterprise indicates that the Angkor Archaeological Park experienced a notable downturn in performance between January and July 2026. Ticket revenue for the period totaled $20.3 million, representing a 29% decrease compared to the $28.6 million generated during the same timeframe in 2025.
Visitor numbers also saw a sharp decline, with 428,223 international tourists visiting the site, down 30.7% from the 618,771 arrivals reported in the first seven months of the previous year. The downward trend continued into July, which saw 40,451 foreign visitors and $1.85 million in revenue, reflecting year-over-year drops of 21% and 20%, respectively.
Thong Mengdavid, deputy director of the China-ASEAN Studies Center at the Cambodia University of Technology and Science, identified several factors contributing to the slump. According to Mengdavid, the decline is linked to regional and global economic challenges, concerns regarding online scams, and border tensions with Thailand. Additionally, he noted that the conflict in the Middle East has negatively impacted the sector by increasing fuel costs and causing disruptions to international flight schedules.
Situated in Siem Reap province, the 401-square-kilometre site is Cambodia's most prominent tourist attraction, featuring 91 temples constructed between the ninth and 13th centuries.
