The APSARA National Authority (ANA) issued a formal rejection on July 18 regarding a report published by Khaosod English. The authority stated that the article, which alleged a ban on “inauthentic Khmer costumes” at Angkor Wat, inaccurately portrayed the intent behind its recent initiatives.
According to the ANA, the organization has been conducting outreach with local costume rental businesses to provide guidance on the preservation and promotion of traditional Khmer attire. The authority emphasized that these efforts are designed to educate vendors rather than enforce a ban, noting that protecting Cambodia's cultural heritage is a collaborative effort involving the government, private sector, and relevant ministries.
The ANA highlighted that it has maintained the Angkor Code of Conduct since 2016 to ensure visitor safety and appropriate behavior at the temple complex. The authority further clarified that authentic traditional designs are well-documented by institutions such as the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and the National Museum. While the ANA supports the freedom of local businesses to operate, it maintains a responsibility to discourage the rental or sale of low-quality items that do not reflect traditional Khmer designs.
The statement concluded by affirming that all visitors who dress respectfully, whether in contemporary clothing or traditional attire, are welcome at the site. The authority reiterated that its primary goal is to uphold the sacred nature of the UNESCO-listed park and foster national pride.
