The ASEAN Observer Team in Cambodia (AOT-KH) conducted a field visit on Tuesday to a civilian residential area in Preah Vihear province, accompanied by the Cambodian Liaison Group (CLG). The delegation, led by the mission head from the Philippines, arrived at Techo Morakot village in Morakot commune, Choam Ksan district, at 10:30 am to observe and verify the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
According to a press release from the Cambodian Ministry of National Defence spokesperson, the affected zone includes 114 civilian households, home to 511 people, of whom 268 are women. These residents have been unable to return to their homes, the ministry said, emphasizing that all affected structures belong to local civilians.
The ministry reported that the area was subjected to attacks by Thai military forces in December 2025, involving airstrikes by F-16 fighter jets and heavy artillery. These strikes caused extensive damage to homes, personal belongings, and civilian infrastructure, leaving many residents without safe conditions to resume their daily lives.
Cambodia reiterated its full backing for the ASEAN Observer Team, stressing the importance of strengthening the AOT's role and mandate to conduct on-site inspections. Such visits are intended to verify the full and effective implementation of the ceasefire, promoting transparency, accountability, and mutual trust, the ministry added.
