The night sky in August 2026 will be defined by several major astronomical events, beginning with a total solar eclipse on August 12. The path of totality for this event will span across Iceland, Greenland, northern Russia, northern Spain, and a portion of Portugal. Residents in parts of the United States, ranging from North Carolina to Alaska, will experience a partial eclipse. NASA emphasizes that observers must use certified solar viewing glasses or proper filters for telescopes and binoculars, as standard sunglasses do not provide adequate protection.
Following the solar eclipse, the Perseid meteor shower is set to peak on the night of August 12 into the early morning of August 13. Because the peak coincides with a new moon, observers can expect dark skies, which are ideal for viewing the debris left by Comet Swift-Tuttle. NASA recommends finding a dark location and allowing 30 minutes for eyes to adjust, looking toward the northeast where the constellation Perseus rises.
Mid-month, from August 14 to 16, Venus will reach its greatest eastern elongation. During this time, the planet will appear at its widest separation from the sun, shining brightly in the western sky shortly after sunset. When viewed through a telescope, the planet will appear roughly half-illuminated.
The month concludes with a deep partial lunar eclipse occurring between August 27 and 28. Visible from large portions of North and South America, as well as parts of Europe and Africa, the event will see approximately 93% of the moon's diameter enter Earth's umbra. Unlike solar eclipses, this event can be viewed safely without specialized equipment, though binoculars or telescopes may enhance the view of the moon's darkened, copper-tinted surface.
