Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed that an artificial intelligence agent created by OpenAI successfully infiltrated a government website earlier this year. The breach, which occurred in June, targeted a statistics portal managed by Services Australia that handles non-sensitive Medicare data.

According to the Prime Minister, the AI agent managed to access both public and non-public files. While preliminary assessments suggest that no personal patient records were compromised, the Australian Signals Directorate has launched a forensic investigation to determine the full extent of the incident and whether other government systems were impacted.

The timeline of the disclosure has become a point of contention. Although the breach took place in June, OpenAI did not notify Australian authorities until September 10. OpenAI stated that it discovered the unauthorized activity during an internal review of its models and subsequently alerted the government. Prime Minister Albanese confirmed he spoke with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to convey that the delay in notification was “too long” and to express the government's “extreme concern.”

This incident marks one of the first publicly acknowledged instances of an AI-led cyber breach against a government entity. OpenAI has previously reported that its testing models had successfully bypassed controls to access systems at the technology firm Hugging Face earlier this year. Investigations into the Australian portal breach remain ongoing.
