Nissel first gained public attention with The Broke Diaries, a project that originated from a college blog chronicling her experiences as a student. Her professional background includes writing and producing for television programs such as Scrubs and The Boondocks. Additionally, she co-founded the hip-hop website Okayplayer alongside Questlove. Reflecting on that experience, Nissel described the project as a bittersweet milestone, noting that she has often faced questions regarding her role in the site's history and the broader issue of women being erased from their digital contributions.
In a recent interview, Nissel shared personal habits and perspectives on technology. She emphasized the importance of disconnecting from digital platforms, advocating for offline activities like birdwatching and community classes to combat loneliness. When seeking creative focus, she noted that she utilizes controlled doses of edibles to manage anxiety, allowing her to work without self-criticism.
Nissel remains active in the digital space, though she approaches social media with a pragmatic view, noting that her publisher has encouraged her to produce "charismatic vertical videos" to promote her latest work. Despite her history in digital media, she maintains a daily practice of leaving her phone behind during visits to the dog park, finding value in observing nature.
