Author and nonprofit founder Dave Eggers recently challenged OpenAI employees regarding the societal consequences of their technology. Invited by CEO Sam Altman to address approximately 200 staff members, Eggers used the platform to express deep concerns about the role of artificial intelligence in the classroom.
Eggers characterized the impact of ChatGPT on the education sector as "catastrophic," asserting that the tool has significantly increased the burdens placed on teachers. Furthermore, he argued that reliance on AI for writing tasks prevents students from developing their own voices and storytelling abilities. "If students are using it to compose, which is the biggest tragedy of all, they’ll never learn to write," Eggers stated, adding that the technology risks "silencing an entire generation or two."
The author, known for his critical perspective on the technology industry—most notably in his novel The Circle—has previously dismissed AI-generated text as "pastiche nonsense." Altman’s decision to invite Eggers suggests an awareness of the writer's stance, given his history of vocal opposition to such developments.
